Asian Eyelid Lift

Consultations offered at our two convenient locations in Manhattan, NY and Queens, NY

Asian blepharoplasty, often referred to as double eyelid surgery, is a highly specialized form of eyelid surgery frequently chosen by individuals of East Asian, or mixed Asian heritage who wish to create or refine a visible eyelid crease, open and brighten the eyes, reduce puffiness, or correct asymmetry. (1) Asian eyelid surgery prioritizes aesthetic balance and harmony through subtle structural adjustments, paying special attention to the unique anatomy of the Asian eyelids. Unlike traditional blepharoplasty procedures, which focus on skin removal, Asian eyelid surgery requires a deeper understanding of crease design, ptosis correction, and managing the epicanthal fold.

At ME Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ruya Zhao brings advanced surgical training and a deep understanding of facial anatomy to every blepharoplasty procedure she performs. To refine her technique, she trained with leading facial aesthetic surgeons in Korea, where Asian blepharoplasty is an art form and performed at the highest volume. Her personalized approach ensures each patient achieves results that feel authentic and refined. Whether your goal is to create a defined upper eyelid crease, smooth under-eye puffiness, or simply rejuvenate your appearance, Dr. Zhao and the expert team at ME Plastic Surgery are here to help you feel more confident in your appearance through precise and thoughtful care.

About Asian Blepharoplasty

Asian blepharoplasty, sometimes referred to as double eyelid surgery, addresses both cosmetic and functional goals of the eyes. (2) The first step of Asian blepharoplasty is to understand the unique anatomy of Asian eyelids, including low or absent eyelid creases, pronounced upper and lower eyelid fullness, narrower palpebral fissure or eyelid opening, and epicanthal folds. These key anatomical differences require specialized techniques to achieve a youthful appearance without looking artificial or overdone. An estimated 50% of East Asian women do not have an upper eyelid crease or have a minimal one, and some prefer the look of a naturally defined crease. (2) Others may already have a faint crease and wish to refine its shape or symmetry. Dr. Zhao will design an eyelid crease with you that suits your overall appearance. Asian blepharoplasty often addresses eyelid ptosis, caused by heavy eyelids due to levator muscle laxity. Dr. Zhao performs ptosis correction to lift the eyelid margin for a brighter appearance.

Unlike traditional blepharoplasty procedures, which often involve removing fat or skin, Asian eyelid surgery emphasizes preservation and structural balance. Dr. Zhao carefully considers facial anatomy, skin thickness, fat distribution, and the aesthetic goals of each patient before planning surgery, meaning our specialized techniques are guided by a commitment to natural-looking outcomes.

Techniques in Asian Blepharoplasty

  • Non-incisional Method

There is no skin incision, thus no visible external scar. The surgery is performed via

multiple micro-puncture holes in the eyelid crease line. This allows the creation of the double eyelid, removal of fat from the upper eyelid, as well as a small amount of ptosis correction. The non-incisional method is ideal for patients looking for subtle enhancement with minimal downtime and no external scar.

  • Partial Incisional Method

This method includes small ~1cm incisions along the eyelid crease. It provides more

exposure for fat removal and ptosis correction. The partial incisional method is excellent for heavy eyelids or asymmetrical eyelids.

  • Incisional Method

Incisional method is necessary for skin removal from the upper eyelids, more severe ptosis correction, and revision blepharoplasty. For patients with excess skin from the upper eyelids or who have severe ptosis, this method allows precise shaping and more permanent fixation.

  • Epicanthoplasty

Epicanthoplasty is done in selected cases when patients have strong epicanthal folds. This is done via z-plasty or v-y advancement to lengthen the horizontal palpebral fissure or horizontal eye opening.

Insurance Coverage

While Asian blepharoplasty can be performed for cosmetic enhancement, there are situations where it is medically necessary and eligible for insurance coverage. If excess eyelid skin or ptosis is blocking vision or interfering with daily activities, insurance may be used to cover part or all of the procedure. Dr. Zhao will evaluate you during your consultation to see if you are a candidate, and additional tests may be required.

Benefits

Dr. Zhao provides patients with subtle yet powerful improvements in both appearance and comfort. With her refined techniques, patients frequently see improvements through:

  • Creation or enhancement of a natural-looking eyelid crease

Dr. Zhao will confirm whether or not you are eligible for this treatment during your initial consultation.

Personal Consultation

To take the first step in your Asian blepharoplasty journey, schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Zhao at ME Plastic Surgery. During this appointment, she will review your medical history, examine your eyelid anatomy, and discuss your goals in detail. Dr. Zhao will assess the presence and quality of any natural eyelid crease, the thickness and elasticity of your skin, and the distribution of fat and muscle in the eyelid region.

Together, you and Dr. Zhao will work to create a personalized treatment plan designed uniquely to help you achieve your goals. If you have previously undergone eyelid surgery, Dr. Zhao will evaluate your current condition and determine whether a revision approach is necessary. This consultation is also the best time to ask questions, express concerns, and explore your options in a collaborative and informed way.

Schedule your consultation today by contacting ME Plastic Surgery online or calling (212) 774-7715.

Preparation

Following your personal consultation, Dr. Zhao will provide detailed instructions to help you prepare for treatment. These instructions will be personalized based on your medical history, procedure type, and lifestyle factors. You may be asked to temporarily stop taking certain medications or supplements that can thin the blood. You will also be advised to avoid using any nicotine products, as these can delay healing and affect the final result. Alcohol consumption should also be avoided.

If you wear contact lenses, you may need to switch to glasses temporarily and discontinue certain eye creams or cosmetic products in the days leading up to your procedure. Dr. Zhao may request lab testing or medical clearance if you have any preexisting conditions. You will also need to arrange transportation and prepare your home for a comfortable recovery.

Procedure

Dr. Zhao performs Asian blepharoplasty in a licensed surgical facility. It typically lasts between one and two hours, depending on the scale of the procedure and patient goals. The procedure may be performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation, or intravenous anesthesia, depending on your preferences and Dr. Zhao’s recommendation.

Dr. Zhao will begin the procedure by marking the ideal placement for the new eyelid crease. She then makes a fine incision along this line, carefully removing or redistributing small amounts of fat and trimming excess skin if needed. She then secures the new crease with internal sutures that encourage natural fold formation and closes the incision with precision to minimize visible scarring.

Recovery

Following your blepharoplasty, you will be monitored briefly in a recovery suite before being discharged into the care of a friend or family member. Dr. Zhao will provide clear instructions for postoperative care. Mild swelling, bruising, and tightness around the eyes are normal and typically resolve within one to two weeks. You may experience temporary sensitivity to light, dry eyes, or minor discomfort, all of which can be managed with prescribed medications, sunglasses, and cold compresses.

You should avoid strenuous activities, direct sun exposure, and contact lens use until cleared by Dr. Zhao. Keeping your head elevated is also encouraged to support healing, promote healthy circulation, and reduce the risk of complications.

Most patients return to non-strenuous activities within seven to ten days. You will likely be able to wear makeup once your incisions have healed completely. The full results will continue to emerge as swelling resolves, revealing smoother, more defined, and brighter-looking eyes.
