Breast Reduction Recovery: An Estimated Timeline
We have put together this estimated timeline to help you better understand the process your body will undergo after your breast reduction procedure. It is important to remember that each patient is unique and that this timeline, as well as other details, may vary from patient to patient. Dr. Everett will provide you with guidelines tailored to your individual case.
Week One
Although your operation will occur under general anesthesia, during your breast reduction procedure, Dr. Everett and Dr. Zhao will perform a specially targeted form of regional anesthesia. This will block any pain or discomfort in the breast and chest for the first 12 to 24 hours after your procedure, allowing you to wake up and return home comfortably. When you do wake up, you will already be in a surgical support bra that features additional packing and padding to add compression.
You may start to experience some general discomfort several hours after your procedure, but you may use pain medications to address it. Many patients elect to never use any of the narcotic pain medication, but those who do will use it for two to three days. If your discomfort is milder, you may also elect to take exclusively over-the-counter medications. Most patients choose Tylenol or Motrin.
Starting the first night of your recovery, you will be permitted to sleep on your back or on your sides. If you regularly sleep on your stomach, you will need to avoid doing so for at least one month. We advise that you put a pillow between your knees to prevent turning or rolling over while asleep.
Two days after your procedure, you will be able to begin showering. You can use your regular body wash and shampoo, but avoid scrubbing the surgical site. You will need to continue wearing the surgical bra around the clock, but you can remove the gauze and padding from the garment after this shower.
After resting for approximately four to five days, you will be able to return to your career and other light activities, although this will vary depending on the nature of your job. If your occupation is more labor-intensive, requires long shifts, or involves travel, you will need to continue to rest for another week or two.
Weeks Two and Three
Throughout your second and third weeks of healing, most of your initial recovery symptoms will dissipate. If you have not yet returned to your career, you will be able to do so during this time, and you may also begin to return to light exercises or cardiovascular-based activities. However, you will need to refrain from any high-impact sports. You may also switch to wearing a bra whenever you are active, exercising, or outside, but you will not need to wear one at home.
Weeks Four and Five
During your fourth and fifth weeks of recovery, any lingering swelling will continue to subside. At this time, you should have fully resumed your routine, including strenuous activities. Additionally, the bra type you wear is at your complete discretion. If you wish to return to wearing underwire bras, you can; The use of an underwire will not affect your healing, but you may find it uncomfortable. Dr. Everett will see you for a follow-up appointment to check in with you and your progress.
Patients can typically resume all activities by this time, but Dr. Everett’s approval is still required.
Long-Term Healing
As you continue to heal, the shape and position of your breasts will continue to change as your tissues continue to settle. This will cease after approximately 4 to 6 months, but your scars will continue to fade and become less prominent over the course of a year. Many patients see refinement in their scarring after 6 and 12 months, but this will vary from patient to patient. You must maintain the scar regimen that the ME Plastic Surgery physicians have prescribed for you for the entire first year after your procedure. You should also be applying sunscreen around the surgical site during the summertime.
When Will You Notice Results after Breast Reduction?
For breast reduction, results are noticeable immediately; you will be able to feel relief from back and neck pain. After your recovery, your breasts will appear smaller, more shapely, and more proportionate to your figure. You may also find it easier to engage in physical activities.
