Eyelid Lift with Insurance
Consultations offered at our two convenient locations in Manhattan, NY and Queens, NY

An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is one of the most impactful ways to restore a more alert, awake, and youthful expression. (1) When excess upper eyelid skin becomes heavy or droops over the lash line, it can create a tired or aged look even when you feel energized. In many cases, functional issues arise as well that impact patients’ everyday life, including blocked vision, difficulty driving, and prolonged fatigue. In some cases, patients can develop headaches and neck strain from involuntarily shifting their head to compensate for their droopy eyelids. For patients experiencing these concerns, an eyelid lift can restore openness, balance, and definition to the face while also providing symptomatic relief from obstructed vision.
Because the skin around the eyes is especially delicate, choosing a surgeon who understands the nuances of eyelid anatomy is essential for achieving results that look natural and refined. At ME Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ruya Zhao performs eyelid lifts, bringing advanced fellowship training and extensive experience to each procedure. In the cases where blepharoplasty can serve functional purposes, insurance coverage may apply. ME Plastic Surgery also offers free insurance verification as part of the consultation process, allowing patients to understand their coverage options before moving forward. About Eyelid Lifts
As the skin loses elasticity and the levator muscle weakens, the upper eyelid may begin to sag. (2) This creates the impression of heaviness or fatigue while also narrowing the visual field for many patients. When these functional symptoms begin to interfere with daily life, an eyelid lift might move beyond cosmetic enhancement and become a medically necessary procedure.
Dr. Zhao performs all eyelid lift procedures using a measured and conservative approach that restores natural eyelid position, removes excess skin, and refines proportions. She evaluates factors like functional concerns that require precise measurement of eyelid position, visual obstruction, and muscle function to determine whether the procedure is eligible for insurance coverage. If your symptoms suggest medical necessity, ME Plastic Surgery will support you in obtaining the documentation your insurer requires.
What’s the Difference Between a Cosmetic and Functional Eyelid Lift?
A cosmetic eyelid lift will improve aesthetics, restore a youthful crease, and brighten the upper face. A medically necessary eyelid lift will accomplish these goals while also improving vision and daily comfort. Both approaches use similar techniques and rely on specific criteria that Dr. Zhao will identify during your consultation.
Eyelid Lifts and Insurance Coverage
Many eyelid lift patients are surprised to learn that insurance may cover part or all of the costs in certain situations, such as those where drooping skin or weakened eyelid muscles impede vision. (3) If you experience limited peripheral vision, difficulty with reading or driving, or strain when looking upward, your situation may meet the requirements for functional eyelid surgery.
Insurance coverage typically applies when:
- Your upper eyelid skin droops over the lash line and obstructs vision
- You experience difficulty performing daily tasks due to blocked vision
- A visual field test confirms a reduction in superior or peripheral vision
- The eyelid ptosis causes symptoms such as brow fatigue or eye strain
During your consultation, Dr. Zhao will examine your eyelids, review your symptoms, and order necessary testing such as photographs or visual field measurements.
ME Plastic Surgery offers free insurance verification for all patients pursuing this procedure. This service helps you understand whether your plan covers the surgery and what portion of the cost may be your responsibility. If your eyelid concerns are primarily cosmetic and do not affect vision, insurance may not apply.

Personal Consultation
A consultation with Dr. Zhao will provide clarity about your candidacy, potential insurance coverage, and the specific techniques she will use for your eyelid lift. Dr. Zhao will examine your eyelid anatomy, assess the degree of drooping skin, and discuss your symptoms in detail. She will evaluate the eyelid margin, crease position, and levator muscle strength. She may also request a visual field test to document any obstruction.
You and Dr. Zhao will review your goals together, and she will outline a personalized treatment plan tailored to your anatomy. If you qualify for insurance coverage, the practice will begin the verification process at no cost to you. Dr. Zhao will also explain what you can expect before, during, and after surgery, including the role of local anesthesia and sedation.

Preparation
After your consultation, Dr. Zhao will provide instructions to help you prepare for your eyelid lift. You may need to pause certain medications, avoid alcohol and nicotine, and limit the use of certain cosmetic products. If you wear contact lenses, you may need to prepare to transition to glasses for a short time. You should plan adequate time off and arrange transportation home.
Procedure
Dr. Zhao performs eyelid lifts in a licensed surgical facility with local anesthesia and intravenous sedation, depending on your case. She performs both non-incisional ptosis correction and incisional ptosis correction, depending on whether excess skin must be resected to correct ptosis.
In patients who are candidates for non-incisional ptosis correction, Dr. Zhao will place 1-2mm stab incisions along the crease line, then she will perform ptosis correction through an internal approach, by resecting/advancing conjunctiva and eyelid muscles from the conjunctival side.
For incisional ptosis correction, Dr. Zhao will mark the ideal crease location, create a fine incision within this crease, and remove/reposition excess skin and tissue. The weakened eyelid muscles will be repaired and/or advanced to correct eyelid ptosis. She will then refine the eyelid shape and close the incision with small sutures that will be removed in 1 week after surgery. This approach supports natural results and minimizes visible scarring. Dr. Zhao uses meticulous technique to ensure that eyelid function and aesthetics remain well-balanced.
Recovery
Swelling and mild bruising will appear shortly after surgery, but they will begin to fade within the subsequent days. Most patients return to non-strenuous activities within one week. Light sensitivity, dryness, or tightness may appear temporarily. Dr. Zhao will give you instructions to support healing, such as using cold compresses, keeping your head elevated, and avoiding strenuous activity. Makeup use can resume once the incisions fully heal.
Results
Your eyelid contour will appear more defined and youthful as swelling decreases. Results will look natural and balanced, and most patients enjoy long-lasting improvements in both appearance and function. When the procedure addresses medical concerns, patients often experience unobstructed vision and reduced eye strain.
Corresponding Procedures
Patients who receive an eyelid lift sometimes choose other procedures for comprehensive rejuvenation. Some of these include:
Brow Lift
A brow lift will improve forehead heaviness that sometimes contributes to eyelid drooping. This treatment raises the brow position and enhances upper face symmetry.
Non-surgical Treatments
Injectable treatments such as Botox or Dysport may help smooth forehead lines and refresh the eye area. These treatments pair well with an eyelid lift to create a more balanced result.
Facelift
For a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the face, some patients opt to pursue a facelift in addition to their eyelid lift to address the signs of facial aging in other areas.
Cost of Eyelid Lifts with Insurance Coverage in NYC

FAQ
Can insurance cover my eyelid lift?
Insurance may cover eyelid lift surgery when drooping eyelid skin obstructs vision or interferes with daily life. Dr. Zhao will evaluate you and order testing if needed to evaluate your insurance coverage possibilities. ME Plastic Surgery also offers free insurance verification.
Does an eyelid lift hurt?
Local anesthesia and sedation will keep you comfortable. Mild soreness and swelling may follow surgery, but they will improve quickly. Most patients do not require heavy pain medications over the first day or two.
Will my eyelid lift results look natural?
Dr. Zhao specializes in subtle, balanced eyelid rejuvenation. Results will look refined and natural.
How long is eyelid lift recovery?
Most patients return to normal activities within one week, with full refinement appearing as swelling fades. While most surgical swelling subsides within the first 4 weeks, subtle swelling of the eyelids continues to improve over the following 3-6months, depending on patient tissue quality and extent of ptosis correction.
Will I have scars from my eyelid lift?
There will not be external scars in patients with non-incisional ptosis correction. In patients who undergo incisional ptosis correction, Dr. Zhao places incisions within the natural eyelid crease, helping scars blend with the surrounding tissue.
